I Haven’t Won But…

I hold aloft the returned sample of chapters and the rejection slip with pride and joy; I have joined the ranks of salubrious and fairly impressive authors who have similarly been rejected! Yippee, I am truly on my way.

Perseverance is worth it…

If this is you, don’t despair because getting published today with an unsolicited manuscript is as likely as winning a starring role in a feature film with Hugh Jackman and Liam Hemsworth, when you haven’t attended any acting classes. The difference is, you have a complete manuscript, you are a writer, and pretty soon you will publish your book. This book could actually become a feature film featuring the afore mentioned actors, and you may be so lucky as to have a cameo role in your own movie. I believe Graeme Simsion of ‘The Rosie Project’ fame will have this happen when his book is interpreted for the big screen by a Hollywood film producer. You heard it here!

It’s okay to pout

You will experience a little lip pouting wobble and a slumping of shoulders, but never stop writing because J.K. Rowling, Tim Winton, Matthew Riley, Stephen King and other highly successful authors have been rejected countless times, and they did not let it defeat them.

In the Meantime, Soldier on…

After receiving my rejection slip, I continued with my Work in Progress which means typing up a second draft of a second novel, and am reading copious books as research for an as yet unnamed fifth script. My first MS became a published book with lots of positive reviews.

Honest Words…

All right, when I did receive that rejection slip I confess to having a little lip wobble, so I bought four new books to read, a block of dark chocolate and reviewed and edited my entire manuscript again (it had already been structurally edited and I had spent two years re-editing that), because that is what you have to do. I did it and it’s published. Now to turn my attention to the other three complete drafts.

If you think you can, of course you can!

If you are rejected, celebrate because you’ve achieved something very few people ever will, that is the completion of a unique manuscript and that indeed is success in itself. Only you know how hard it was to reach that point and so you alone know the true value of what you’ve achieved.
